Throughout his long life, Brother Michael Naughtin remained a humble, unassuming man – never demanding the honours and public commendation that would be due to someone of even half his distinction.
His greatness, nonetheless, was renowned and celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him. On Thursday 26 March, the St Joseph’s College community came together for a final tribute to a man who had given so much, to so many.
The mass was an opportunity to give thanks for the gift of Brother Michael, and to pay tribute to his life and achievements.
"He was a gentle and courteous Brother, a distinguished scholar and author, a lifelong student especially of the classics and a well-prepared teacher. May his wonderful example live in our memories," said Headmaster, Mr Ross Tarlinton.
Students and staff formed a guard of honour down the SJC driveway, a mark of respect as Brother Michael left the college he so dearly loved for the last time.
The presence of a large number of Old Boys, families, Brothers and colleagues was testament that Brother Michael’s spirit and influence will live on and continue to help shape boys into caring, compassionate and well-educated young men who value their relationships with others and their faith.

As Brother Michael Green summed up so appropriately in a eulogy that was sprinkled with references to the classics – one of Brother Michael’s great loves:
“What a gift he has been to all of us. When shall we see his like again?”
