Great results at North-West Equestrian Expo

equestrianIn the latter part of Term 2, seven SJC students joined competitors from 100 schools to compete in what has been dubbed the nation’s largest secondary school equestrian event, the North West Equestrian Expo in Coonabarabran.

This is a unique sports event in which male and female secondary school students from eastern Australia – ranging from areas near the Victorian border to southern Queensland – compete against each other over four days.

Now in its nineteenth year, the competition caters for elite riders in the Olympic disciplines as well as pleasure riders, with graded divisions for most events.

More than 600 horses and riders featured on the program, each of them displaying their considerable skills in dressage, showjumping, cross-country, polocrosse, working horse challenge and hacking.

For such a new, young team, small in number, the St Joseph’s College students did exceptionally well. A number of ribbons were received, including three third place ribbons won by Charles Ewin, Joshua Boland and Max Knight (Y7). In the Barrels, the three man team of Charles Ewin, Alex Newsome and Charlie Edwards performed exceptionally, finishing 8th out of 112 teams.

The students from Joeys were able to take part in the Equestrian Expo thanks to the work of team managers, Stewart and Anne Edwards, and the supervision provided by the parents of those competing. The boys would like to thank everyone who helped and encouraged them during the competition.
