The 2008 Higher School Certificate results have the staff and students of St Joseph’s College celebrating many outstanding group and individual performances.
Six students will be named on the Premier’s All Rounders Merit List (released 18 December) for scoring more than 90 in 10 or more of their units. Almost half of the Year 12 cohort will be named on the Distinguished Achievers List (released 18 December) for scoring in the top band for a subject, with the list containing 180 SJC entries from 86 students across 30 different courses.
More than half of all 2 unit course exam results (525 out of 990) were in the top two bands (marks of 80 and above) and 87 per cent of all extension course results were also in the top two bands.
This year, 11 Year 11 students from St Joseph’s studied the 2 Unit Mathematics and Mathematics Extension 1 courses as part of an accelerated Maths program at the college. Of the accelerated students, 10 achieved band 6 results and two achieved Band 5 results in 2 Unit Mathematics, and all achieved marks in the top two bands in Mathematics Extension 1.
Particularly strong results were recorded in Ancient History, Studies of Religion II, General Mathematics, Music 1, and PDHPE. All students studying Design and Technology, Music 1, Visual Arts, French Continuers, Japanese Beginners and Latin Continuers achieved a mark of 70 (Band 4) or greater.
The college received very pleasing results in English, the only mandatory course in the HSC, with all courses above the state mean. In English Advanced, 100 per cent of students were placed in the top three bands (scoring a mark of 70 or more), and in the most demanding English course – English Extension 2 – 100 per cent of students were in the top band. In English as a Second Language 77 per cent of students gained a mark of 70 or greater, compared to 58 per cent in the state).
Headmaster, Mr Ross Tarlinton, said he was extremely pleased to see so many students from St Joseph’s achieve outstanding results across such a wide range of subjects. “These excellent results highlight the college’s commitment to providing boys with an education that is comprehensive, well rounded and, importantly, one that inspires them to want to learn,” he said.
“The boys were motivated and worked extremely hard during their time at the college, and their results are well deserved. I congratulate them, as well as their families and teachers, on these wonderful achievements.”
