The St Joseph’s College First XI cricket team was in fine form at the Marist Carnival in Bunbury, Western Australia, remaining undefeated to bring the Stan McCabe Trophy back to Hunters Hill once again.
It is the 14th time a team from St Joseph’s has won the trophy in the carnival’s 39-year history – a remarkable record for the College. The boys proved far too strong for their opposition, with the team dominant in all five matches, losing only 19 wickets throughout the week.
Five boys from SJC were selected for the Combined Australasian Marist team – Jesse Fenech (Y12), James Williams (Y12), Hamish Bartlett (Y12), Benjamin Rodgers (Y12) and Jackson Watts (Y12), and Mr Richard Casamento was named coach of the Combined team. Declan O’Donahue (Y12) was recognised for his outstanding leadership throughout the week with the team’s Champagnat Award.
Mr Pat Rodgers said there were many excellent individual performances by SJC players at the carnival. “One particular highlight was Hamish Bartlett’s 104 runs from 72 balls against Bunbury Catholic College,” he said.
“We are very appreciative of the tremendous support we received from the 26 Joeys parents and families who travelled to Bunbury to encourage the boys throughout the week. Their enthusiasm and dedication to the boys and their sport helped foster a great spirit at the carnival.”
“We are also very thankful to Catholic College, Bunbury for hosting the very enjoyable carnival.”
