One of St Joseph’s College’s great long-time supporters, Ronald Johnson (47), died on 19 February whilst holidaying in France at age 80.
Ron was a student of St Joseph’s from 1940 to 1947, and maintained a very close association with the college community throughout his whole life.
He was the Campaign Director of the SJC Fundraising Campaign that did extraordinary work in financing the college’s buildings during the 1960s. He had a pivotal role in the building of the then Years 11 and 12 accommodation blocks, with the 1969 College Magazine describing him as “the greatest cause of its [the building’s] success”. “We hope that he will always see in the new buildings a visible result of his unceasing work, and a lasting monument to his endeavours for the college.” (p36).
In 1969 Ron was made an Affiliate to the Religious Institute of the Marist Brothers. From 1959 to 2002 he was a committee member of the SJC Old Boys’ Union, and held the role of president from 1985 to 1987. In 1989 he was a founding member of the St Joseph’s College Foundation Inc.
Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Mr Ross Tarlinton, said Ron embodied the true Joeys spirit of family, loyalty and generosity.
“Throughout his life Ron displayed intense loyalty, and never spared himself in support of the Brothers and the college,” he said.
“He was a wonderful example as an Old Boy of the college who assisted so many by his word, deeds and example. Ron supported boys while they were students at the college and this support continued well after their graduation – many Old Boys feel a deep sense of gratitude to him for his support and assistance. He contributed great time and energy to the Old Boys’ Union and was very actively involved in the life of his beloved college.”
“Ron was also a very dear friend to the Marist Brothers, and will be greatly missed.”
Ron Johnson will be remembered as a wonderfully devoted supporter and friend of the Marist Brothers and St Joseph’s College. Throughout his life he was always forthright in view, wise in counsel and generous beyond measure.
The college community extends its deep sympathies to the Johnson, Davis and Marr families.
