The College’s 2009 School Certificate results were very pleasing, with the cohort achieving above the state average in all six examinations. The excellent results continue the College’s exceptional record of strong academic performance in the state-wide Year 10 tests.
The percentage of St Joseph’s College students in the top two bands (Bands 5 and 6 – scoring above 80%) was consistently and significantly above state figures as follows:
Across all tests (except for Computing Skills which is not scored using bands) more than 42% of results were in Band 5 or 6. That is, more than 42% of all results (from 772 results in total) were marks of 80% or better.
Strong results were achieved in English – literacy, with 91.54% of SJC students scoring a Band 4 or above (a mark of 70% or better) compared to 82.09% of students across the state. In Mathematics 73.71% of SJC students scored a Band 4 or above compared to 49.1% across the state.
Each year, St Joseph’s College also provides mathematically gifted Year 9 students the opportunity to sit for the School Certificate Mathematics test one year early. Of the 25 Year 9 Accelerated Mathematics students in 2009, nine students scored a Band 6 result (90% or better) and 16 students scored a Band 5 result (80–89%). The highest achieving student in this accelerated Year 9 cohort, Hamish Elliot, scored 98%, placing him second overall in the College’s Mathematics test results.
Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Mr Ross Tarlinton, said it is pleasing to see the College continually achieve results above the state average in the School Certificate. “I am especially grateful to the staff for their hard work and encouragement of the students,” he said.
“St Joseph’s has a proud record of academic excellence, and once again the students have proven that the College’s focus on providing a very broad, balanced education, combined with supportive families and exceptionally dedicated teaching staff, will help boys achieve.”
