Ben Thompson (2013) – RIP

Posted on November 17, 2016

It was with great sadness the St Joseph’s College community mourns the sudden death of Old Boy Ben Thompson of the Class of 2013.

Headmaster Ross Tarlinton said many within the St Joseph’s Community will have fond memories of Ben. “He was a fabulous boy who tried his best at everything he did and faced the challenges of life with extraordinary tenacity,” he said.

Tragically, Ben appears to have experienced major heart failure while at cricket training. His mates at training made every attempt to revive him; however, this was not to be.

Mr Tarlinton has been in contact with Ben’s parents, Louise and Steve, and has offered them and their family the full support and condolences of the College community. Louise said she and her family lost their beautiful son doing what he loved so much – playing cricket.

After graduating St Joseph’s College in 2013 Ben headed to Coffs Harbour to commence a bakers apprenticeship. More recently Ben had decided to commence his studies at Southern Cross University to become a teacher. He was a very active member of his parish in Coffs Harbour, especially in its ministry to youth.

Ben’s parents were great supporters of the College whilst Ben was a student. They will miss Ben deeply, as will his sisters.

Ben’s funeral will be at St Augustine’s Coffs Harbour at a time still to be advised. Ben’s family is hoping to have a memorial mass at Joeys in the near future for the many families in Sydney who will not be able to travel to Coffs Harbour.

Mr Tarlinton said Ben was a student he would always remember. “He was a great young man, one of our best.”

May Ben rest in peace with St Marcellin Champagnat.
