A little piece of history

A week ago today the College welcomed back its Year 12 class of 2019 for the Academic Prize-Giving evening. It’s always an inspiring start to the year as achievements are celebrated across the year groups and new boys and their families enjoy a special introduction to Joeys’ vibrant academic life. The guest speaker was Old Boy and eminent scientist Dr Peter Rowley (1968). In the audience was his grandson Charlie Rowley (Y10) and Charlie’s dad Matthew, also an Old Boy (1989).

The family made a little piece of Joeys history when Dr Rowley became the first Old Boy to present an academic prize to his own grandson. College Dux for 2019 Rhys Barrow told the audience he remembered “sitting in this hall six years ago, watching these men in suits walk across the stage with freshly grown long hair and their greatest possible attempt at a beard”… and now here he was in the same spot. “You truly don’t realise how special this place is until you’re gone,” Rhys said.
